5th Grade

10 years – 11 years old

(This program is for children older than 10 years old and younger than 11 years in June.)

Our Fifth grade Core Curriculum introduces World Cultures through the studies of ancient civilizations including India, Persia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece. Greek myths and Greek history; Geography of North America; cartography; botany; fractions and decimals; free-hand geometric drawing; composition, spelling, reading, arithmetic.

A fifth grade is often referred to as the “heart of childhood.” The student may experience a harmonious center point between their experience of the lower grades and the upper grades to follow. During this academic year, children tend to be balanced in expressing their “feeling” life, harmonious and graceful in their movement, and eager and enthusiastic in their learning. They have a sense of competence in their skills that brings forth an eagerness to expand their knowledge.



 

Language Arts

We introduce essay writing in the fifth grade. The student continues to develop their proficiency in writing paragraph essays using proper styles of punctuation and verb tenses. This ability is applied to the student’s State reports and geography. Students present of their State reports to the school and parent community. In fifth grade, students study other cultures that differ from their own biography. The student relies on research papers, books and interviewing individuals from a different culture to present their findings through speech, reports and cooking.

 
 

Mathematics

In fifth grade, we introduce ancient number systems from historical studies. The student continues to build basic skills involving ratio and proportion, decimal and proper fractions, mixed numbers, and the conversion of values from one system to another.

 
 

Geography

The student is introduced to the study of North American geography and the art of map making with two and three dimensions and with a variety of materials. The student learns the earth as an organism within the plant world of botany.

 
 

Movement

Students participate in Yoga and one-day Greek games pentathlon.

 
 

Music

Students continue with the study of stringed instruments or take up the study of wind or brass instruments.

 
 

Handwork

Handwork continues with Knitting, and Woodworking is introduced.

 

 

Summer Camp

Sign up for summer fun at Hummingbirds’ Collaborative School as we celebrate our sunny days with outdoor water play, hikes in nature, craft-making, and cooking together. We offer movement games and songs, daily storytelling and puppet shows, and picnic lunches in the shade of our leafy trees.
